I didn know where else to look as she applied gloss to my lips. So I stared at her. Jessica focused on doing my makeup. I didn want to move, afraid that if I did, I would make her mess up. But when a soft laugh left her lips, and she said, ”Relax, you
e like a statue right now. ” All my muscles soften. Jessica laughed again. She puts the tube of gloss down and looked over my face.

”Can I see it now? ” I asked, bouncing around on the floor. Jessica picked up the handheld mirror and handed it to me. I take it, looking at my reflection. I gasped and lowered the mirror to look at her.

”You don like it? ” She asked with a small pout.

”I do! I look freaking amazing. This is crazy! ” I laughed as I looked back into the mirror.

My cheeks and nose had a soft pink blush. And from the bronzer, they glowed. My lips were a glossy red tint. The eyeshadow on my lids was a soft orange. I couldn get over how flawless my face looked, either.

”Its a simple look, so maybe you can do it yourself when you want to do your own makeup, ” Jessica said.

Yeah, like I could do this look by myself. Ill end up looking like a clown or something.

”Thank you for doing my makeup, ” I said, sitting the mirror down.

”You
e pretty. ”

I reached out and pushed her shoulder with a laugh. ”Yeah, with the makeup on. ”

”Without the makeup, you
e still a pretty girl. ”

Even with the blush on my cheeks, Jessica could probably tell the difference between my fake blush and my natural one creeping to my cheeks. She puts the makeup into a bag, and she gets up from the floor, stretching. Today, she wore a more comfortable outfit. Grey joggers with a rugrats crop top.

”Would you like a room tour? ” Jessica looked down at me. I nodded, getting up from the floor. When I first entered her room, the size of it surprised me. My room was a shoebox compared to her large bedroom.

First, she showed me a wall full of pictures of her friends and her job at the Maid Bunnies café. She had a few movie posters hanging up on the pale yellow walls. And fairy lights going along the ceiling of her room.

”And the bathroom is there. ” She points at the pale yellow door that had a sign on it that reads OPEN. ”This is the bed, but you saw it, ” Jessica said.

”Wheres your tv? ” I asked as I spun in a circle to see if I had missed it.

”I don have one. ”

”Why not? ” I stopped, staring at her.

”My parents don allow TVs in the rooms. I have my laptop and phone for when I want to watch something. ”

At one point my parents wouldn allow a tv in my room until I reached high school. They figured Id be responsible enough and not stay up late on a school night watching tv.

Jessicas cell phone rings from over on her nightstand and she goes to answer it. I looked around her room. She has a bay window that looked out at the backyard. Theres a bookshelf by the bathroom. I walked over to look at the action figures she had scattered around the shelf with one book, milk, and honey by Rupi Kaur.

”It won be the two of us anymore. My friend is bringing his bum ass over here. ” Jessica said as she stood beside me.

”Oh, I can leave. I don want to be a bother. ”

”You won be a bother. He will be a bother. ” Jessica walked toward her bedroom door and I follow behind her as we leave the room. We walk downstairs and into the kitchen. ”Help yourself to anything. I think theres cake in the fridge if my father hadn eaten it. ” Jessica leaves the kitchen when the doorbell rings.

I sat on a stool at the bar. I wasn comfortable going in someone elses fridge, even with permission.

”And when I asked if I could get another uniform shirt because I ripped my only one. He said I had to pay for a new one. That new uniform won be issued until December. ” I hear a male voice say as he enters the kitchen. ”So here I am for you to sew my shirt. ”

”The cake wasn in the fridge? ” Jessica asked me, ignoring her friend holding out his shirt for her to take.

”Oh, I don know. I wanted to wait for you. ”

Jessica went to the fridge and her friend came and sat on the other stool beside me. He lays his shirt up on the island. ”And who are you? ” He asked hastily.

”Im Nana, ” I said.

”Im Seth. you
e pretty Nana. Got a boyfriend? ” he asked.

Jessica clears her throat as she sits the cake on the bar. It was a round white cake decorated with strawberries.

”Don bother her, ” Jessica said, cutting into the cake.

”Im not bothering her. All I ask is if she had a boyfriend. ”

”Thats none of your business. ” She puts a slice of cake on a plate and sits it in front of me.

”It kind of is if I wanted to get to know her. ” He said.

”Do you? ” She looked at her friend.

”Yeah. ” He then looked at me, smiling. And I smile back at him.

”You can , ” Jessica said, sitting a plate of cake in front of him.

”And why not? ” He looked back at her.

”Because Im trying to make her mine. ”

Seth burst out laughing and when he saw Jessica wasn laughing, his laughter died down. ”Oh, you
e serious? ”

”I think Jessica will make a good friend, ” I spoke up, and they both looked at me.

”Damn, she friend zone your ass, Jessica. ”

”Remember I have until the end of October. ”

”For what? ” He asked.

”Don worry about that. Just eat your cake. ” She snapped at him.

Jessica hands us forks. She stood eating her cake with her hand. Seth didn use his fork; he took two bites, and he was done. While the two friends chat. I ate my cake and thought about what Jessica had said. I saw Jessica as being a good friend and didn want her wasting her time trying to get me to like her romantically.

I never wanted to explore my sexuality or experiment. Because I liked boys. It was flattering that a girl like Jessica would have a crush on me. Hell, I should be glad someone was even interested in me.

Jessica walked me to the bus stop and waited with me. I told her she didn have to wait with me, but she didn want to hear any of it.

We sat on the bench, not speaking. Jessica was doing something on her phone, and I was playing with the strap of my purse.

”Listen… ” I said. Jessica had given me her attention and was looking at me. ”Don you think it will be nice if we were just friends? ”

She sighed. ”Am I coming on too strong? ”

It pressured me she wanted to make me fall for her by the end of October. But a part of me honestly wanted for things to happen naturally if that could even happen.

So I said, ”Being friends would be so much better. ”

”I guess I can put myself in your shoes. You
e a straight girl. So having another girl crush on you must be overwhelming. ” Jessica said. She stands up from the bench when the bus approached. ”Im not one to give up easily, but if you want to be nothing but friends, then Im okay with that. I won take this as a rejection, but just as a sorry, Im not interested at the moment. ”
