“And that’s why–”

“What did you say?!”

She was so distraught by the shocking bomb I dropped, “My brother got a new wife,” that she mumbled, “Eh? Wha? Wai? Wh-ha? Ow!”.
Akane, who had been busy with her Japanese language difficulties and banging her little finger on the corner of the round table in her room, finally regained her composure.

After I explained the situation to her again, what came back was such an absolute zero response.

Scary.

“What I said you say… Well, you know.
I was surprised too… “

“No, you shouldn’t be surprised.
You should be more upset!”

“Well, I’m upset too.”

After all, she is the “villainess”.

Though now that I think of it, maybe she’s not that bad of a person, but at first I was upset, too.

“Well, it can’t be helped.”

“Don’t ‘It can’t be helped’ me! What is he even thinking, that no good of a father!.”

“Oi~, Akane.
That’s a bit much, don’t you think.
I certainly have my doubts about what my dad did, but it really can’t be helped.”

I was angry, but I think it was a bitter pill to some degree.
I know that my father cares about me and Akane, and I know that he loves his employees just the same.
So It’s not hard to imagine that he probably borrowed money to keep them off the street.

“That’s not the point! Borrowing money or something like that isn’t a big deal! I’m talking about the fiancee!”

“Well yeah… It’s an anachronism to have a fiancee in this era of modern Japan.

“It’s not that unusual to have one! The problem is that “Oni~” has a fiancee!”

“What’s wrong with me having one?”

What is she even angry about?

“Haaaa.
You know, Oni~.
That Higashi-Kujo is a famous family right?”

“….”

“Eh? What happened?”

“Wait, so you also knew? That our head family is some kind of old noble family?

“Hah? What are you talking about? Wait.
Don’t tell me that you didn’t know about this until now.”

“I knew that our main family was rich, but I didn’t know that they were that big.”

“…”

“…”

“Eh? I’m speechless.
Oni~, don’t you think you’re a bit too uninterested in family affairs? Can you remember Akemi’s birthday party last year? It was amazing, wasn’t it?”

“The one where they rented out that hotel? That was really amazing…”

“Even at that time, aside from the prime minister, several ministers of state were there too, you know? I was greeted by them.
Even I was greeted by them.
Oni~, don’t tell me they didn’t greet you?”

“When I think about it, yea,  about that one, I thought it was just some old guy I’ve seen on TV.”

I mean the food was so good.
I was fascinated by that instead.

“My brother is horrible.”

“Don’t call me horrible.”

“You are.
If you were born from this family, it should be common knowledge.
Why don’t you know that?

“I’m sorry for not having common knowledge”

I have lived a life of shame.

“Haaaa.
Let’s leave aside the fact that Onii has no common knowledge and get back to the point.
Regardless of what Onii thought, Higashi Kujo is a famous family and since Akemi is the only daughter of the family, Teruhisa Oji-sama loves her so much that it wouldn’t hurt to put her in his eyes.”

(T/N: “It doesn’t hurt if you put it in your eyes” is literally a metaphor for “it’s so cute that it doesn’t hurt if you get it in your eyes.” Often used as a metaphor for loving children and grandchildren.- meaning.jp

Oji-san means uncle or middle aged man in Japanese)

“He really does love her, doesn’t he.”

Teruhisa Higashi Kujo is the current head of the Higashi Kujo main family, and although he has a stern appearance, he is in fact a kind and good-natured old man.  Perhaps because he doesn’t have a son, he loves me as if I were his son… Either way he’s a good man.

“Even if that wasn’t the case, the only daughter of the head family of Higashi Kujo is inevitably going to get a son-in-law, right?”

“I understand now.”

“That’s right.
You can’t get a son-in-law from a strange place either.
Then… inevitably comes up, right? Therefore the most likely “potential son-in-law” is…”

“Potential son-in-law?”

“You really don’t get it? He’s a boy of the same age, with a solid background, Uncle Teruhisa has known him since he was little, he loves him like a son, and he’s close with Akemi-chan.”

“….”

“….”

“Could it be… me?”

“Not “could it be”, it is “you”.”

“Wa… Ha? Me and Akemi getting married?!”

“It’s just a possibility, however it’s quite a realistic possibility.
I didn’t ask him directly, but from the way he was acting, he seemed to be on board.

“I didn’t hear anything about this…”

“After hearing that thing, can you still talk with Akemi the same way as before without changing your attitude?

“I can’t.
I can’t do it, but… besides? What were you going to do if I had a girlfriend?”

“Don’t you think that’s a good idea? Oni can have a love affair of his choice in high school and then eventually… is what I believe Oji-sama was thinking.
What percentage of high school couples do you think will make it to the finish line? Of course it’s less likely to go all the way to marriage.”

“True…”

I don’t mean to make fun of them, but some high school romances are like a fever.
And it’s not likely to lead to marriage, is it? Well it’s not something a guy like me with no experience of having a girlfriend should be saying in the first place.

“Besides, Oji-san.
He thinks about me more than my own father.”

“It’s natural, isn’t it? He’s the head of the main family of Higashi Kujo.
How can you be the head of the main family if you don’t have the capacity to think about the younger members of the branch?

“Branch, you say.”

Are you the yakuza?

(T/N:

Yakuza – Japanese organised crime groups

Branch (Eda) in yakuza speak – Refers to the secondary organisation of the yakuza.
Depending on the context, it may refer to subordinate groups such as tertiary groups and quaternary groups.

“I think Oji-sama is going to be pretty mad after he hears about this.
Our father probably didn’t consider telling Oji-san about this beforehand,  and if he didn’t know about the next head of a branch of the family’s marriage in the first place, it would not only ruin his honour.”

(T/N: She says メンツ here for honour.
It’s a term used in the Yakuza)

“Honour?”

You are the yakuza after all.
Besides,

“I don’t think he took it into consideration.
Probably.”

“Yeah.
He’s your father after all.
I don’t think he could be that considerate.”

“Oi.
He’s your father too.”

“Well I’m just like mom.”

“Poor dad.”

“Well, dad isn’t that good with the head family.
He probably doesn’t even want to get involved with them.”

“Really?”

“Well we aren’t that involved either, but dad’s blood is more “thick”, right? So he ran away when he was about to be forced into various troublesome positions.
My uncle was complaining about it the other day.” (T/N: Thick in this sense probably means he has a more closer blood connection to the main family)

“He said that they took all the good positions from him.”

“Dad is the cousin of the current head of the family.
There’s no way there’s not a single good thing left for him.
Well that’s enough talking about that.
Nothing we can do about it.”

“Yeah.”

“For the meantime, let’s keep this only between me and you, Oni~.
You mustn’t let Akemi hear about it, okay? If that happens, I’m sure it will reach Oji-san’s ears and…”

“And?”

“He will make dad swim the Kamogawa.
With concrete boots.” (T/N: Kamogawa or Kamo River is in Kyoto, Japan.
)

“….”

“…”

“I wouldn’t..
want that.”

“We wouldn’t want any victims from our family, do we?  It might not be that bad, but it definitely won’t be good for our family.’

“Right.”

At the very least, Akane’s permission to live in the main house may get terminated.
It would be very inconvenient for Akane as well.

“Shall we keep it a secret for Akane’s sake?”

‘Onii? I appreciate the sentiment, but you don’t have to worry about me, okay?”

“Of course I’m going to worry about you.
You’re my cute little sister.”

“Thank you.
You’re making me embarrassed, so that’s enough, okay? Anyway, you worry about yourself first!”

Absolutely! After saying that, ‘It’s late, I’m hanging up,’ she ended the call.

“Haaaaah.”

I stare at the phone even though she has already hung up.

“So much work ahead..”
