Yang Mo came out of the house, passing by the community square and spotting Han Shi Yu on the phone near the flower bed with Er Dan by his side.
He wanted to call out to him but stopped in his tracks when he saw the colourful toy balls all over the ground.

He looked up at Han Shi Yu again, just in time for him to throw another ball out of his hand.
The border collie did not go pick it up but paced to the basket filled with balls instead.

It took a ball in its mouth and walked back slowly, returning it to Han Shi Yu who was concentrating on the phone call.
He took the ball without looking and threw it out again.

The above actions were repeated yet again.

“……” Yang Mo called out, “’Han Shi Yu.”

It just so happened that he was almost done with his phone call.
After giving a few more instructions, he hung up and smiled at Yang Mo, preparing to get up until he saw the ground filled with colourful balls.

Han Shi Yu: ……”

He turned his gaze over to Er Dan, who was lying on the ground and guarding the empty basket with its tongue out.

Han Shi Yu felt like he was being mocked by this four-legged creature.

“You little bastard,” Han Shi Yu found it funny but also vexing at the same time, “I was wondering too – aren’t you tired from running back and forth so many times?”

Yang Mo: “……”

And it just so happened again that Yang Han and Lu Yue Ming also arrived and saw that miserable scene.
The two of them looked puzzled at first, thinking it was Er Dan who knocked over the basket and the balls spilled out.
Only after Yang Mo briefly told them what happened, did Yang Mo shrug her shoulders, looking like she had expected it.

She turned to Han Shi Yu and said, “I said so already, didn’t I? It’s smarter than you.”

Han Shi Yu:

Taking care of a border collie at home.
It made me throw out balls yet fooled me by bringing back the balls from the basket.
I was on a call and didn’t notice it…I thought no one was allowed to become an immortal after the founding of our country1?

He included a picture of the border collie lying on the ground with balls surrounding it, as well as the empty basket beside it.

Tomorrow would be Chinese New Year’s Eve.
Old Yang planned to take Yang Han to the market to purchase some Chinese New Year goods.
He disliked buying these things online because he felt like those were usually lacking in flavour.

Han Shi Yu who had nothing better to do proposed to go together with them.
Yang Mo placed the basket of balls down and walked out from the balcony.
He ended up being dragged into the discussion by Han Shi Yu with just a few sentences.
Yang Han suggested dragging Xiao Lu in too, which Lu Yue Ming agreed with a smile.

After settling everything they planned out for tomorrow, Han Lang and Yang Mo personally cooked dinner for them.

The next day, Old Yang went to the street with his entire family.
Yang Mo got dragged along by him to greet others with, auntie”, “grandmother”, “grandpa”.
“grandaunt”.
In contrast, Han Shi Yu was a lot more relaxed.
He even had the leisure to inspect some tomatoes from someone’s stall.

The stall owner stared at him with a strange gaze.

Yang Han thought to herself, that if she saw a man wearing sunglasses and wrapped up like a model who had gotten off the runway, wandering around in front of stalls and sticking out like a sore thumb – she would also look at him with a strange gaze.

Lu Yue Ming was beside him as he showed an expression filled with disbelief.
He smiled, “I didn’t think uncle would come to these places.”

In his impression, a capitalist of Han Shi Yu’s level should be linked to luxury items and high-end locations.
He would travel with a private jet or first-class ticket instead of personally driving long-distance in a car.
The scent on him should be of expensive perfume rather than the smell of freshly picked fruits and vegetables.

Yang Han looked at Lu Yue Ming.

She couldn’t get her words out either.

When she was adopted by Yang Mo and Han Shi Yu at seven years old and first entered the family, the period of adapting was extremely short.
Just like the mixing of water and milk – with a touch of her hand and it would instantly melt together.
That kind of feeling was hard to describe.

To Yang Han, both of her fathers were different from others, yet at the same time, not that different either.
They were unreachable and untouchable but also two ordinary people.
Yang Han could live her life by their side without having to change her nature into a rich family’s.
She could live happily, be protected and kept safely as she lived in the most ordinary and comfortable way.

Just like the Chinese New Year clothes on her now.
They weren’t expensive – just a few hundred yuans – but Yang Han thought they were comfortable and really beautiful too.

Just as expected, Han Shi Yu haggled with the stall owner and they started to quarrel.

Han Shi Yu took off his sunglasses, rolled up his sleeves and confronted him.
But the stall owner was an old man and he didn’t know any President of Ji Xun.
His dark skin was covered with furrowed wrinkles.
He stretched out his stiff neck and quarreled loudly with Han Shi Yu in a dialect.

Yang Han watched from afar, thinking this was like a world’s famous painting that could land on the hot search.

Yang Han answered Lu Yue Ming’s question, “He has a big heart and doesn’t mind going anywhere.”

Lu Yue Ming laughed.

Han Shi Yu had just finished closing the deal.
He carried the bag of red tomatoes and yelled, “WeChat pay or Alipay!”

Like an old CD that wouldn’t blend in with the times now, that old man snapped back with a hoarse voice as he shook his head, “None of that, none of that!”

Han Shi Yu clicked his tongue and went around to the side, exchanging cash with a vendor who supported online payment.

That old man tucked away the crumpled money and waved at him as a greeting.

Han Shi Yu walked back towards them.
That old man claimed that his tomatoes were all-natural and pesticide-free, so Han Shi Yu took one, wiped it with tissues and took a bite.

He blended in perfectly with the crowd next to him and seemed to know how to follow their customs without even being taught.

He handed the tomatoes to Yang Han.

“”

Yang Han took them.

She found out that Han Shi Yu had lived up to his reputation in haggling the tomatoes’ price from the original cost of 3 yuan per pound to 4.5 yuan per pound.
No wonder the old man sent him away with awe in his eyes.

“……” Yang Han had never seen such a haggling where the more you quarreled, the more the price increases.
She said in awe too, “How did you do it?”

“I don’t know either.” Han Shi Yu took a bite of the fresh tomato and said with a frown, “It’s too difficult.”

Footnotes

In classical Chinese literature, there are often the transformation of animals into spirits – this phrase describes animals who show (smart and cute) human-like behaviour, so much as if they have become spirits themselves.
