THE BAKERS OF ALCUIN

Grandpa\'s Party

A week before my grandpas birthday, my family and I went on a shopping spree to throw him a huge surprise party.

I remembered buying dozens of balloons, party hats, and confetti.

On Grandpas birthday, we woke up early just after he left for a golf championship with his old friend Joey.

My sister and I helped our mother to bake a vanilla and blueberry birthday cake with a lot of creative decorations, such as: sprinkles, blueberries, and a miniature sculpt shaped cooking utensil made of icing on top. Mommy thought that the decoration should be relating to baking as it was the root of our family tree was planted into baking.

Mixing the vanilla batter was my favourite thing to do, mainly beacuse Mommy allowed us to lick the bowl and the spoon covered in sweet vanilla cake mix and icing after she poured the mixture into the baking pan.

The decorations were the most difficult test. My father purchased a pack of helium balloons by accident, and inflating them was a tough task. I blew and blew till I felt like my lungs were punchered. These balloons stood still like rocks, not even having the thought to inflate.

Me: ”Dad, what kind of balloons are these? ” Are they even made from rubber? ”

My father: ”They are-Oh, I must have purchased the wrong balloons. These are hellium balloons. ”

My father: ” they should be inflated using a helium pump ”

I felt even more relieved when my father found the pump. And at last, those non-movable pieces of rubber finally became inflated. My father quickly tied the first one onto a string and told me to hold it tightly. Just then, I was distracted by my mother when she called for Lacey and I to come look at Grandpas birthday cake. She was adding the icing.

”Yay! ” Its finally done! ”, I said after that, letting the balloons loose and racing my sister to the kitchen.

By the time I was done viewing the cake, I came back to the living room expecting to see the red eggplant-shaped balloon on the floor, but it was not. Where could my balloon have been? I searched left and right, inside and outside, on a phone, and found no signs or traces of the balloon. It wasn until I had laid down flat on the floor and looked up, and there it was. My balloon was in the ceiling, but how did it get there? I wondered.

My mother: ”Didn Daddy tell you to hold it tightly? ”

me: ”Yeah, he did, but I didn know that it would fly away. ”

My mommy: ”Air balloons stay down and helium balloons go up. ”

My mommy: ”Well, I don know how you
e going to reach it. ” I see, lets put it on hold and get some new ones. ”

But do not let go of the balloon this time.

In order to get the birthday party going, we all had roles to play. My sister was in charge of making sure that all the gifts were present for the party, and I was hired to help mommy serve them drinks and snacks just in case they got hungry or thirsty.

And as it has already been going, more bad luck has arisen. This time, one of the numbers that Mommy purchased to put on Grandpas birthday cake couldn be found. The mother was adding final touches to the cake, such as the numbers.

me: ”How can Grandpa be seven years old when he looks so old? ”

My mother: ”Where is the number 6? ”

My mother: ”I was sure I had purchased it and it was cashed. I swear that it was in the box with confetti. ”

My father said, ”You must have lost it. ” Try retracing your steps; are we purchasing another one before Grandpa gets here? ”

I thought it was too late to buy a new one and right after, I told Grandpa and his old friend to enjoy strolling into the yard.

”Quick! Quick! ” I exclaimed.Grandpas coming ”

It was too late to go on and purchase the number six for the cake. This process left a smudge mark in the middle of the cake.

My mother: This is just a minor scratch. I bet Grandpa won even notice it one bit.

”Knock, knock ”

Everyone in the house: ”One, Two, Three, Surprise!

Standing behind the door, poor Grandpa looked terrified. He didn look surprised at all. He stood still with his eyes wide open, holding his chest and his heart as he fell flat onto the ground. I was devastated. All we wanted to do, obviously, was to surprise him and make him feel extra special on his birthday. It turns out that Grandpa had fainted, but luckily a group of guests were quick to catch him.

I stood behind the crowd surrounding Grandpa at the front door. They tried many different ways to just wake up Grandpa. Some of these activities included smelling dirty socks, shouting in his ears, and tickling him.Unfortunately, none of those work. Despite this, my sister, Lucy-Ann, was kind enough to suggest that they use a smelling salt to stimulate his sense of smell. This would surely wake him up, and as promised, it did just that.

The look on his face was even more terrifying than he was. My heart melted and I felt relieved. At last he was okay.

The party guest: ”Are you OK? ” We are truly sorry. We did
t mean to cause such trauma. ”

Grandpa: ”Of course yes, its OK, I am fine. ”

The party guest: ”Thank goodness! ”

Grandpa: ”You guys, I appreciate it, but you did not have to. ”

My father: ”Oh yes we did! Now lets turn this party up. ”

The party started off with some of Grandpas favourite games. These were: musical chair, Ludo, and guess the word. It was all filled with fun and excitement. You were expected to laugh or giggle with silly movements and strange faces.

Just when Grandpa held the knife, anticipating cutting it, there was a loud knock at the front door.

”Knock! ” Knock

By the sound of the knocking, all the talking, chuckling, and music stopped. Grandpa went up the front door with a puzzled expression, and all eyes were on the door. However, when the door was opened, a lady was standing behind it. She was holding a gift box in her hands and was also looking exotic. Though the lady looked quite fancy, she was not dressed for the occasion at hand.

She spoke in a polite manner and said that:

The anonymous woman: ”Its great to see you again Maxwell, happy birthday! ”
