Chapter 1: Scholarship

(Little Ravine POV)

”Lets go! ” I said to my best friend, Frida as we rushed to the empty playground and went straight for the swings.

We sat and began competing with each other to see who can swing higher.

”Frida, I am way higher. ”

”No, you
e not. ”

We laughed and enjoyed the peaceful aura of the deserted playground that is until three boys arrived and confronted us about the playground being ”theirs ”.

”No losers allowed in this playground. ” A boy said.

”Yeah, who told you that you can play with the swings? Its ours. ” The boy next to him said.

”No, its not. Its for everybody. ” I said.

”Yeah, we were here first. ” Frida added.

”Get off our swings. ” The third boy screamed.

”Come on Ravine, lets just go. ” Frida who hates conflicts and confrontations got off but I stood my ground.

”But we were here before you guys. ”

One of them went towards me and shoved me down the ground.

”Ravine! ” Frida said as she helped me up. I was about to say something when a strange boy appeared out of nowhere.

”Leave them alone. ” He said.

”Oh yeah, what are you going to do about it? ” One of the bullies pushed him but the strange boy punched him on his stomach making him whine in pain.

”Ow! ”

”You want some of this too? ” He asked the other two bullies.

”Lets get him. ” The two idiots said. They tried to attack him but they ended up getting punched as well, making them whine on the ground in pain.

”I am telling my mom. ” One of them said as they all walked away, crying.

I looked at the strange boy and he smiled at me. I smiled back before getting distracted by Frida.

”Ravine, we should go home. ”

I turned my head to the strange boy before noticing that he was already gone.

The very next day, I couldn focus on my school work. I kept thinking about the strange boy. Who is he? Where did he come from? He didn even introduce himself. He just vanished.

The bell suddenly rang.

”Recess! ” Teacher Molly announced. Everyone began dispersing and so did I. I got out of the room and made my way to the cafeteria.

”Ravine, wait for me. ” Frida called.

”Frida, lets search for him. ”

”For who? ”

”The boy yesterday, maybe he goes to this school. ”

”Lets just play outside. ”

”We have to thank him. I think Ive seen him before here. ”

”Ravine, hes gone, forget about him. Lets go play at the swing. ” Frida said before pulling me in the opposite direction. I sighed before giving in to her.

It makes me quite sad, knowing that I may never see him again. We could have been good friends. I wonder how hes doing right now.

I am currently in the same playground where Frida and I met the boy who saved us. Mama and Papa do not know I go here everyday just waiting for the strange boy to show up and say hi to me but he never did.

I then saw a little figure running from afar towards the playground. I actually hoped it was the strange boy but the nearer it gets, it just appeared to be Frida. I frowned.

”Ravine!! ”

”Hey! ”

”We have the swings to ourselves again. ” She giggled before sitting next to the swing I am sitting on.

”Ravine! Can you give me a push please? ”

I grunted before standing up and complying. I gave her a push while my mind lingers again.

”Ravine? ” Frida annoyingly asked.

”What now? ”

”Are you thinking about the strange boy again? ”

”No. ” I said as I just kept pushing the swing shes sitting on.

”Liar. ”

”Okay, fine! I am, so what? ”

”I think about him sometimes as well. It doesn make sense how he vanished just like that, you know. Do you think hes a ghost? ” Frida asked stupidly.

”Theres no ghost that can punch, Frida. ”

”Do you think the three bullies will come back here? ”

”I don know, and will you please be quiet, Frida? Im trying to think here. ”

”Okay. ” She said.

Finally, theres some silence.

I wonder why I am so curious about him. Of course, I am. He saved us but why did he vanish so quickly? In a blink of an eye, he was already gone. Could Frida be right? Could he possibly be a ghost? Right now, I am not so sure anymore.

”Frida, I have to go. Mama and Papa might be looking for me. ” I said.

”Ill stay here for a while. ” She said.

”Are you sure? ” I asked.

”I still want to swing. ”

”Suit yourself. ” I said as I gave a one last push before walking away.

It didn take long before she changed her mind.

”Ravine, wait for me. Im going too. ” She said before running to catch up to me.

”I thought you
e staying behind. ”

”Well, I don want to anymore. The ghost boy might appear again. ”

”Hes not a ghost, Frida. ”

As annoying and clingy Frida may be, shes still the closest thing to a sister that I have ever gotten, being an only child. Our parents are really close friends and that brought me and Frida even closer because we have known each other since our diaper days. We promised each other that we would go to the same middle school and high school and college, if ever we want to go to college. We also promised that we would never marry. Its just us forever.

Yes, me and her against the world.

I just hope we can keep that promise.
